Why I Chose Nursing And Earned My BSN
Nursing wasn’t something I grew up surrounded by. Unlike some who are inspired by generations of family nurses—moms, grandmas, and great-grandmothers—my surroundings did not mirror this. Growing up in New York City, I admired the professional women in Manhattan: briefcases in hand, suits pressed, looking like they were in charge. My dream was to become a businesswoman, a boss.
But as I got older, I realized that building a business from the ground up can be risky. One week, you're riding high; the next, you might struggle to keep things steady. When I reached high school, I started to question if business was the right choice for my next steps.
Then, one day, everything changed. An older Black man who was substituting at my school saw my ambition and gave me advice that has stuck with me ever since. He suggested I consider nursing, explaining how stable and versatile it could be. He said, “You could get on a plane to Hawaii right now and have a job waiting for you.” Those words planted a seed. Nursing could offer me a stable career with decent pay—and I could use that income to support my future business ventures.
I decided to take that leap. I genuinely enjoy working with people, and nursing gave me the chance to make a difference, while also providing a strong foundation for my dreams. I earned my BSN and now work as a pediatric nurse, with experience in both hospital and home health settings. My career has been fulfilling and empowering in ways I didn’t expect.
As I grow, I’m transitioning from bedside care into roles like project management and healthcare informatics. This journey from clinical care to the business side of healthcare excites me, and I want to bring you along with me. I’m grateful every day that nursing has allowed me to support my business dreams and explore new opportunities in the healthcare industry. Nursing has become more than just a career—it’s the foundation that’s helping me achieve more than I ever thought possible.
